China's wish list

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-19 14:10:33

Chinanews, July 19 - New Weekly and sina.com.cn rely on online votes to
publish "China's wish list".
72.68% of people do not hesitate to put "make more money" as their

Family income are like women's age, always a secret - the only thing one
can be sure is, for one the desire is for more (money), for the other the
desire is for less (years).
Other items that got on the wish list include: travel around the world
65.12%; China being number one 54.09%; buying a fancy car 48.50%; living
in a mansion 48.27%; well-read 45.23%; friends all over the world 44.39%;

Under the blazing sun, they cheered the opening of their camp by waving
their flags at Zhongshan Park.
Held by the All China Taiwanese Association, the 15-day summer camp

Male and female cycas in blossom concurrently

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-08 15:35:06

In this hot summer, a couple of cycas are in blossom in front of the
office building of Langzhong Brigade of Traffic Police in Sichuan on the
morning of July 7th. The two 73-year-old cycas are in blossom
concurrently for six consecutive years. The stamen is 60 centimeters tall
and the golden pistil with a diameter of 30 centimeters yields plenty of
fruit as white as Chinese chestnuts. According to experts on wildlife
protection in Nanchong, blossom of cycas is not rare, but it is extremely
exceptional that two cycas growing in the same place are in blossom
concurrently. An expert assumed that the rare blossom had something to do
with the fertile soil and plenty of water in the habitat.

China's economy starts modest adjustment

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-06 11:40:04

Chinanews, July 5 - According to the magazine Outlook Weekly, Chen
Dongqi, deputy president of the Macroeconomics Research Institute under
the National Development and Reform Commission, pointed out that after
three years of growth, China's economic growth is entering a new era of
modest adjustment. The new era is characterized by modest decrease of
economic growth.
Chen said that "modest adjustment" refers to moderate decline of economic
growth, probably dropping by two percentage points over last year's 9.5%
to the range between 7% and 9.5%. Provided the decrease is too sharp, say
falling to below 7% or even encountering a hard landing (which means
dropping by half to below 5%), China will face more pressure in terms of
unemployment and deflation and its national economy will also be plunged
into the marsh of chronic downturn and miss the opportunity for
development during the prime time.
Chen indicated that during the era of modest adjustment, macro control
should be focused on the following five aspects:
First, timely cope with latest change of economic situation based on the
idea of taking precautions beforehand. Second, make rational adjustment
to leading indicator and appropriately relax currency credit. Third,
actively promote balanced increase of three major types of demand.
Fourth, make effort to accelerate growth of "short barrel industry."
Fifth, create a macro environment beneficial to efficiency growth for
enterprises.
Chen added that the Chinese government's next round of macro control
policy and measures of system reform has to regard acceleration of
developing modern service industry as a strategy and enhance to open the
market of modern service industry to the privately-owned enterprises.
China will have to establish service industry market of multi-competition
to accelerate modern service industry which will serve as the basis to
maintain the growth of national economy.

NASA probe hits comet target

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-04 14:17:36

In this image released by NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Tempel 1
comet is shown after the impactor probe from the Deep Impact spacecraft
collided with the comet early Monday, July 4, 2005. The successful strike
83 million miles away from Earth occurred just before 11 p.m. PDT,
according to mission control at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in
Pasadena, Calif., which is managing the 333 million USD mission. (AP)

This rendering by artist Pat Rawlings, released by NASA, shows the Deep
Impact spacecraft's projected encounter with comet Tempel 1. (AP/NASA)

July 4 - A space probe hit its comet target late Sunday in a
NASA-directed, Hollywood-style mission that scientists hope will reveal
clues to how the solar system formed.
It marked the first time a spacecraft touched the surface of a comet.
The successful strike 83 million miles away from Earth occurred just
before 11 p.m. PDT, according to mission control at NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Pasadena, which is managing the million mission.
Scientists at mission control erupted in applause and gave each other
hugs as news of the impact spread.
"The navigation was perfect, and the impact was bigger than I expected,"
said one of the specialists from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory here
shortly after the impact. "I can't imagine how this could have gone any
better."
It was a milestone for the U.S. space agency, which hopes the million
experiment will answer basic questions about the origins of the solar
system.
The cosmic smash-up did not significantly alter the comet's orbit around
the sun and NASA said the experiment does not pose any danger to Earth.
