Tourists were appreciating an incense burner previously treasured in the
Buddha hall of the Palace of Compassion and Tranquility, the residency of
queen mother of Emperor Kangxi (1654-1722) in the Imperial Palace, on
Apr. 12. The royal cultural relics and jewelry exhibition organized by
Luoyang Museum opened on that day, unveiling 1,300-odd treasures and
cultural relics of Qing Dynasty (1616-1911) palace to the public. These
cultural relics include furniture, Buddhist statues, ceremonial
instruments, porcelains and paintings, which were all tributes presented
by various regions to the royal family from Emperor Kangxi's reign to the
late Qing Dynasty. Most of them were shown to the public for the first
time.

China agrees to hold talks on auto parts

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-10 09:09:30

(Source: China Daily)

Apr.10 - China has agreed to hold consultations with the United States
and the European Union (EU) over import tariffs on auto spare parts,
according to the Ministry of Commerce.
The US and the EU jointly filed a complaint on March 30 with the World
Trade Organization (WTO), accusing China of violating its commitment to
the WTO by imposing a discriminatory tariff regime on foreign car parts.
Sun Zhenyu, China's commissioner to the World Trade Organization, has
informed his US and EU counterparts that Beijing has accepted their
request to participate in consultations, the ministry said in a statement
published on its website on Saturday.
"The time and place still have to be decided," the statement said.
The US and EU response was not available last night.
China is scheduled to lower tariffs on whole vehicles and spare parts to
around 25 per cent and 10 per cent respectively by July this year in line
with its commitments to the WTO.
However, according to a regulation on the imports of vehicles implemented
since last April, China applies tariffs for "whole vehicles" on the
import of spare parts making up 60 per cent or more of the value of a
vehicle.
Major US and EU automakers said the regulation hinders their access to
China, one of the world's largest and fast-growing auto markets.
The United States and the EU claimed, in the joint complaint with the
WTO, that China's rules contravene its WTO obligations not to impose
obligatory "local content" rules because to avoid the "whole car" tariff
rates, a car-maker has to source at least 40 per cent spare parts by
value in China.
According to the WTO regulations, the two sides shall start consultations
within 30 days.
In case an agreement is not reached in the next 60 days, the EU and the
US have the option of requesting a WTO panel to hear and rule on the
dispute. Such WTO disputes usually take two to three years to resolve.
China's regulations do not violate WTO rules on origin, which calculate
the origin with added-value, said Mei Xinyu, a trade expert with the
Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Co-operation, a think
tank with the Ministry of Commerce.
"Although the WTO prohibits obligatory rules on the proportion of
imported products, it does not ban certain tariffs," he said.
China's imports of vehicles and spare parts were valued at US$13.6
billion last year.
This is the first time China has faced a dispute with the EU at the WTO
and the second time with the United States the first being on
semiconductors.
The case is one among several disputes between China and the United
States before President Hu Jintao's visit to the country, including
intellectual property rights, the trade surplus and the yuan rate.

This year, the traditional spring folk art festival of Hunan's Dong'an
County fell on March 22. Local farmers always follow the folk custom of
rushing for She Huo, a folk art performance given on traditional or
religious festivals. On this day a commodity trade fair was also
voluntarily held by local rural residents. In the county's Shiqi town,
the marketplace was packed with farmers from the county and neighboring
areas who came for agricultural production materials, creating a
boisterous view.

Ding Junhui survives 1st round scare

www.chinanews.cn 2006-03-22 09:51:43

(Source: Xinhua)

Mar.22 - Defending champion Ding Junhui survived a low start to go
through the first round over compatriot Yang Qingtian 5-4 in the 2006
World Snooker China Open in Beijing on Tuesday.
After losing the opening frame, Ding came back and took the lead 2-1.
However, China's wild card player Yang displayed a strong resistance.
Yang seemed to be vulnerable in the following frames and but managed to
level the game 2-2.
After losing the fifth frame, Yang began to launch his attacks in the
sixth and won the frame with a break of 107.
"I had a good performance today," said 24-year-old Yang, "but Ding is
better than me in controlling the white ball. It is a pity to lose the
game."
In the match full of mistakes and errors, Ding wasted several good
chances to extend his lead, only to see the two Chinese players again
tied at 4-4 to enter the deciding frame.
Ding, now ranked No.61 in the world, finally found his rhythm in the
ninth frame and took the frame easily with a 119 break, left no chance to
Yang.
"It is a fortune that Yang didn't open the frame very well and left me a
big chance," said Ding, "This is my best chance during the game and I am
happy to take it."
"Yang's performance today was better than mine, but he was quite nervous
in the final frame, so I won," added Ding.
Ding may play another China-derby in the second round, as his opponent on
Thursday will be the winner between Graeme Dott of Scotland and
19-year-old Chinese Yu Delu.
Veteran world No.9 Mark Williams celebrated his birthday with a victory
over Drew Henry 5-1 on Tuesday.
Williams showed high profile during the match, including a 116 break in
the third frame and a higher 133 in the fourth.
"I always like to play in China. I need to win couple of matches and I
don't want to lose on my birthday, which is today," said Williams after
the match.
"I played well today, I had good performance last month, I hope to keep
playing like that," said 31-year-old Williams.
Another match in Tuesday's evening was between Scott MacKenzie and
Matthew Stevens, as wild card player MacKenzie won the game 5-4 over
world No.4 Stevens.
