Locals perform dragon dance as part of the consecration ceremony of
dragon in Saiying town, Guizhou province on Jan. 31, 2006. The dragon
dance, also known as the dragon lantern dance, is a unique folk dance in
China. The performers wave props shaped like a dragon to the
accompaniment of drums and gongs, displaying a powerful and majestic
momentum. In the remote past the dragon dance was performed to pray for
rain and now became a major item of entertainment during festivals,
especially the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month.

Xianglu (incense burner) Mountain tourist resort, which is located in Bin
County only 78 kilometers away from Harbin City, becomes a typical route
in 2006 "folk customs and cultural tourism" on Jan. 24. It is a
combination of entertainment on ice and snow with folk customs in
northern China during the Spring Festival, including sleeping on a Kang
(Chinese heated brick bed) in rural families, having frozen dumplings,
tasting meat and vegetable stew, lighting firecrackers, pasting Spring
Festival couplets, rising a sled, skating, skiing, playing peg-tops,
appreciating ice lanterns and so on.

Chinese auditors to probe Beijing Olympics

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-28 09:27:55

(Agencies)

The main structure of the National Stadium has been established in this
photo taken on December 21, 2005.

Dec.28 - China's state auditors will extend their search for government
corruption next year to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Xinhua news agency
said, probing the massive construction schemes being readied for the
event.
The audit could shine unprecedented light on the Beijing Olympic
organizing committee which is overseeing the massive project of preparing
the Chinese capital for the Games.
"The Beijing Olympic organizing committee's income and expenses and the
competition venue construction situation" would be among the five main
audit subjects in 2006, Xinhua cited National Audit Office director Li
Jinhua as saying on Monday.
Another project to come under the spotlight would be the Three Gorges
Dam, the world's largest hydroelectric power scheme, Xinhua said.
Li has become a folk hero in China, where his office's annual reports on
government finances have drawn attention to massive abuses.
Audits for the first 11 months of this year uncovered misappropriation of
$36 billion) of government funds, officials said this week.
The Chinese government is pumping a huge amount of money into the 2008
Olympics. The budget for venue construction stands at around $2 billion
even after organizers scaled back plans for some Games venues, including
scrapping a retractable roof for the showcase "bird's nest" National
Stadium.
By 2008, Beijing expects to have spent a total of nearly US$40 billion on
the Olympics, most of which will go to building new roads and subway
lines and improving the city's power grid and environment.
Next year's audit checks will not be the first time China's sports world
has come under scrutiny.
In September, the Audit Office said the General Administration of Sport
collected 24 million yuan in sponsorship funds which were never paid out.
Its 2004 report revealed that between 1999 and 2003, the state sports
administration had "misused" 131 million yuan of funds from China's
National Olympic Committee, most of which went to building housing for
administration staff.

China developed highly compatible software

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-19 13:51:39

Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 19 (By Wu Qingcai) - Sursen, a software company
in Beijing's Zhongguancun Science Park, announced in Beijing that it has
developed the SEP Writer technology, which will bring forth revolutionary
changes to the global software industry. This technology successfully
shattered the technological barrier that one document can only be edited
by a certain application software and realized sharing, exchanging and
editing of electronic documents among different applications for the
first time in the world.
Authoritative software experts pointed out that such technology enabled
China's software industry to fulfill the zero breakthrough and lead the
world in the core technology arena for the first time. Promotion and
application of this technology will alter the long-time constrained
situation of the domestic software industry in terms of the core
technology arena.
SEP Writer technology broke the conventional pattern of "source
application format as a standard" and adopts the technological course of
"archiving as a standard." Generally, one document can only be edited
with one application, but SEP technology will change the current
situation of incompatibility among different applications in the software
industry which has remained a headache of global software magnates for
many years and realize sharing, exchanging and editing among different
applications.

China to end textile export tariff

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-16 09:27:19

(Source: CRIENGLISH.com)

Dec.16 - Chinese Finance Minister Jin Renqing says China will stop
collecting export tariffs on textile goods, starting January 1st, 2006.
He said on Thursday that China has reached deals with the European Union
and the United States this year. Based on the deals, China should
self-control the volume of textile exports to the two regions.
He explained China will scrap export tariffs, otherwise, textile
enterprises would suffer more limits.
The export tariffs imposed this year were aimed at adjusting the pace of
textile exports, helping to maintain the world textile trade order and
promoting the sustainable development of the Chinese textile industry.
Meanwhile, Jin Renqing said China will further cut import tariffs on more
than 100 categories of products beginning next year, which implies China
is basically in accordance with tariff reduction commitments employed
since entry into the World Trade Organization in 2001.
Items to enjoy lower import tariffs from January 1st include oil,
chemicals, automobiles and auto parts.
He said since China has fulfilled most of its tariff reduction
obligations, the latest plan will not have a big impact on China's
overall tariff level. China's overall level of import tariffs will remain
at 9.9 percent in the coming year.
Jin Renqing added that China has reduced its average import tariff to
15.3 percent for farm produce and 9.0 percent for industrial goods since
2001, much lower than the world average level.

China not to readjust RMB exchange rate in Jan.

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-13 15:29:25

Chinanews, Dec. 13 - Shanghai Securities News reports that yesterday,
People's Bank of China (PBC) Governor Zhou Xiaochuan denied the hearsay
that China would readjust RMB exchange rate next January. He also
indicated that PBC has no fixed arrangements for swap business.
At the Caijing Magazine annual meeting held yesterday, Zhou criticized
the economic forecast in a transition period, pointed out some aspects
that need improvement, and said that attention should be paid to
intrinsic flexibility of the Chinese economy.
Zhou deemed that during the transition period, economic forecast shall
prevent "rigid assumptions," such as rigid price level despite
manufacturers' consumption of materials and consumers' demands, rigid
import and export, stagnant labor force, laborers and wage level,
inflexible investment and interest rates, and no bankruptcy or shutdown
of enterprises.
Zhou stressed that a flexible Chinese economy will see ebbs and flows.
Therefore, economic forecast should focus on digging out and manifesting
intrinsic relations. Accelerating flow of work force, growing proportion
of private enterprises as well as small and medium-sized enterprises,
plus intensifying market-oriented reform will help enhance flexibility of
the Chinese economy. He suggested that economic forecast value adoption
of basic theories, analysis of changeable factors, and studies on
countable common proportion, production function and utility function on
the basis of econometric theories.
"Some deem that economic transition should take the 'shock therapy,' but
China's step-by-step reform has proved its favorable effects," said Zhou,
"we must take intrinsic flexibility into full account when analyzing how
an economy should handle its future."
