Fernando Alonso leads Chinese Grand Prix

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-15 19:22:24

(Source: Agencies)

Spanish driver Fernando Alonso takes pole ahead of Renault team-mate
Giancarlo Fisichella for Sunday's China Grand Prix.

Shanghai, Oct. 15 - New world champion Fernando Alonso gave Renault the
edge for the constructors' championship, leading a sweep of the top two
spots in qualifying Saturday for the Chinese Grand Prix.
It was the sixth pole position of the season for Alonso and ninth of his
career, but the first time this season that Renault will dominate the
front row of the starting grid.
Alonso, who clinched the drivers' title two races ago, posted a time of 1
minute, 34.080 seconds on the 3.388-mile Shanghai International Circuit
to take pole after trailing Kimi Raikkonen through the four practice
sessions.
"I am a little bit surprised to be on pole position but the car was
perfect," Alonso said. "Everything here has been very positive all
weekend. Tomorrow I am full of confidence for all the team."
Alonso's Renault teammate Giancarlo Fisichella was second with a time of
1:34.401, while Raikkonen whose had some wiggles during his lap was
third at 1:34.488.
"The car was not exactly perfect," Raikkonen said. "We had a little bit
difficulty to get the tires working. For sure we knew before qualifying
that maybe we wouldn't get the pole, but we are still ready to fight for
the win."
McLaren teammate Juan Pablo Montoya looked to have fourth spot on the
grid before Jenson Button went out near the end of the session and posted
1:34.801 in a BAR-Honda.
McLaren and Renault are locked in a two-way duel for the constructors'
title at the Formula One season-ending Chinese GP. The order of the
constructors' standings determines how much funding each team receives
from the sport's governing body.
Renault leads McLaren by two points, 176-174, reversing the two-point
advantage that McLaren held last week. The competition could go down to
the last lap, just as Raikkonen passed Fisichella on the final circuit of
last week's Japanese Grand Prix.
Heading into Sunday's 56-lap race, Raikkonen has seven victories this
season compared to Alonso's six. McLarens have won the last six races
with Raikkonen and Montoya splitting them three each.
Raikkonen and Montoya were 1-2 in both morning practice sessions with
Alonso and Fisichella in third and fourth places.

Women in China embrace divorce as stigma eases

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-08 14:24:03

(Source: NY Times)

Overall, China's divorce rate, as figured by comparing the number of
divorces with the number of marriages in the same year, is about 19
percent, nearly five times the 1979 rate. That is still far below the
divorce rate in the United States, which has been about 50 percent in
recent years. Last year, the number of divorces in China jumped 21
percent from 2003, with 1.6 million couples splitting up. Roughly 6 in 10
opted against a contentious court divorce and chose the fast,
noncontested divorce offered at government civil affairs offices. There,
couples need only a marriage certificate, identification card,
photographs and a divorce application.
The simplicity of the process has led to a new, if rare, social
phenomenon, the "flash divorce" (as well the "flash marriage"). Chinese
newspapers have carried accounts of young couples marrying in the
morning, arguing at midday and divorcing in the afternoon.
Chang Jie regards her short marriage as a foolish mistake. In September
2003, when she was 24, she married her boyfriend in Beijing the day
before she left for a job more than 1,000 miles away in the southern city
of Macao. For four months, the new couple communicated mostly by e-mail.
When Ms. Chang returned to Beijing in January 2004, her husband asked for
a divorce. They had spent only a few days together as a married couple.
"He told me he didn't want to do this anymore," recalled Ms. Chang. "It
shocked me." But she added: "It was better to end it. I think a lot of
young people end their marriages in two years."
Divorce is much more common in the more prosperous cities than in poorer
rural areas. In Beijing, for example, one study found that the divorce
rate last year was 50 percent. Even so, divorce is rising in rural
migrant families where a husband working away from home may only see his
wife once a year.
Here in coastal Guangdong Province, a densely populated manufacturing hub
that is one of the wealthiest regions in China, a local newspaper
recently carried an article suggesting that Sept. 30, the eve of the
weeklong National Day holiday, would be a "lucky" day to get divorced. It
was a twist on the Chinese tradition of getting married on fortuitous
holidays.
For many older couples trapped in loveless marriages, the new law has
meant an exit without the shame of seeking permission. But Ms. Lu, who
runs the Women and Gender Study Center, said younger couples were often
less concerned about shame and more interested in whether the marriage
has enough money and sex. If a person is unhappy over these issues, he or
she is less likely than prior generations to simply bear it.

A Miao girl was drying cayenne peppers in the sun at Huama Miao Village,
Gandong Township, Rongshui Miao Autonomous County in Guangxi's Damiao
Mountain area, on Sept. 29. Huama Miao Village, which has a hundred-year
history of planting cayenne peppers, produces traditional cayenne pepper
products. Those cayenne peppers are planted in deep mountains and

Low-altitude airspace to open for private

www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-24 16:20:08

(Source: China Daily)

BEIJING, Sep. 24 - China is likely to open "most or even all of its
low-altitude airspace" around 2010, according to a top official at one of
the country's leading helicopter manufacturers.
Speaking in Beijing on Friday, Zhang Hongbiao, president of China
Aviation Industry Corp II (AVIC II), said China's huge potential demand
for helicopters and light planes, which lies both with government
agencies and the growing billionaires' club, would become a reality in
the next five years when the country will probably lift its long-standing
restriction on the use of airspace below 3,000 metres.
However, the Air Traffic Control Committee (ATCC) of the Central Military
Commission declined to comment on Zhang's statement.
The strict control of low-altitude airspace has long been regarded as a
bottleneck in the country's aviation development, which is predicted to
witness explosive growth in the next decade.
"China's monitoring equipment for low-altitude air traffic management has
now reached the average level of those of developed countries," Zhang
said. "So, opening low-altitude airspace to the public is feasible for
China."
He said the ATCC has been considering relaxing restrictions for some time.
China's huge potential market for helicopters, which could be used for
law enforcement, medical aid, news reporting and other businesses, has
already lured the world's leading manufacturers to take action even
before the airspace opens up.
Italian helicopter maker Agusta set up a 40-60 joint venture with
Jiangxi-based Changhe Aircraft Industries Group, a subsidiary of
State-owned AVIC II, earlier this week.
With an annual production capability of 40 aircraft, the joint venture,
the first of its kind in China, will at first produce six units annually
and then 20 units a year in the near future, company President Wang Bin
said.
Wang said the new company would mainly produce Agusta's A109E Power
model, an eight-seat light helicopter with twin engines.
Wang said the first China-made A109E, named the CA109 in China, will roll
off the production line by next June. It will be China's first self-made
double-engine light helicopter.
"Several domestic clients have showed great interest in the CA109, and we
are having talks with them," Wang said, adding that the major market for
the CA109 will be within China, with demand from government agencies,
businesses and the military.
Renzo Lunardi, deputy director of the Anglo-Italian Agusta Westland
group, said the A109E Power retails at around US$4 million. So far, 600
units have been sold worldwide.
Lunardi said the CA109, weighing 3 tons with a cruising speed of 285
kilometres per hour, would initially be assembled from imported kits, but
it was hoped to later source components from China.
Insiders say China's demand for helicopters is expected to peak in the
coming decade with potential orders likely to amount to 1,800 units.
Statistics from the General Administration of the Civil Aviation of China
(CAAC) show that more than 270 Chinese have qualified to fly helicopters
and light planes since the CAAC allowed the issuing of private licences
in August 1996.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Sept. 19 - It will cost $104 billion over the next
decade to send astronauts back to the moon, NASA's chief said Monday,
defending the price tag as an investment the nation can afford despite
the expense of Hurricane Katrina.
Described as "Apollo on steroids," the new moon exploration plan unveiled
by the space agency will use beefed-up shuttle and Apollo parts and aims
to put people on the moon by 2018.

Saddam pleads innocent, trial adjourned

Saddam Hussein holds a copy of the Quran as his trial begins in a heavily
fortified courthouse in Baghdad's Green Zone, Iraq, Wednesday Oct. 19,
2005. (AP)

BAGHDAD, Oct. 19 - The first session of former Iraqi president Saddam
Hussein's trial ended Wednesday afternoon after judge ordered adjournment
until Nov. 28.
At least one international legal watchdog welcomed the adjournment by
Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin as a sign of fairness to a defense that
complained it had insufficient time to prepare for a case centring on the
killing of 148 Shi'ite Muslim men after a failed assassination attempt in
1982.
Saddam himself insisted he was still head of state. He and his seven
aides all pleaded not guilty.
The trial began shortly after 12:00 p.m. (0900 GMT), two hours after the
scheduled time.
